Hyve Group: An events industry carbon reduction case study

Find out how ecollective worked with listed B2B events company, Hyve Group, to calculate the carbon footprint of their offices and events, set their net zero target, and identify key carbon reduction strategies.

The challenges facing Hyve Group

Not knowing where to start

Hyve Group’s expertise lies in running successful events. In their own words, “We had no idea where to start with measuring our carbon footprint”.

A complicated business model

Hyve Group is a global business listed on the London Stock Exchange. They have multiple teams running huge multi-day events, all around the world.

Events have lots of moving parts

Hyve Group runs some of the biggest B2B events across retail, manufacturing, fintech and engineering. Measuring just one of their events is a big undertaking.

ecollective’s process

A 2 part approach

We started by looking at Hyve’s operational footprint. This included their offices, website, staff commuting and working from home emissions.

The second part of the process involved looking at their events. During the project, we kept in mind our goal which was to gather Hyve’s primary data to teach us where its carbon hotspots lay. With this information, we were able to identify key areas for Hyve to reduce its carbon footprint without negatively impacting the quality of their events.

A step by step approach

With a large company like Hyve Group, getting buy-in across the business was crucial. Alongside our work, we gave presentations to the senior team during which allowed us to gauge any concerns as well as suggest ambitious but suitable solutions.

We believe that sustainability, when done right, should make our clients’ work easier.

Develop a methodology to measure future events

We worked with Hyve’s team to measure 5 very different events. The aim of this work was to create a simple, time-efficient way of measuring all future events regardless of their venue, length, suppliers, etc.

The tool means that event organisers can quickly estimate the carbon impact of any given event and identify the carbon hotspots they need to work on reducing.

“We're so grateful to ecollective, not only for the work done in solving a hugely complex problem for us, but also for the lasting tools they have given us, and the friendly and collaborative way the project was managed.

— Nikki Griffiths, Group Communications & ESG Director

The results!

Total carbon footprint established

Hyve now know what the overall carbon footprint of their business is and where the hotspots are.

Turned intent into action

Hyve Group has wanted to tackle its carbon emissions for some time. The work carried out has provided them with a data-driven strategy for carbon reduction.

Carbon literacy training

Hyve Group has asked ecollective to provide carbon literacy training to teach their teams how their business can evolve to lower its carbon footprint whilst still creating incredible events.
