What is the Glasgow Declaration?
In 2021, at COP26 in Glasgow, the UN adopted the Tourism Declares a Climate Emergency declaration as the central tourism industry framework for climate action. Simply put, a business that signs this declaration is committing themselves to reduce emissions by 50% by 2030. The more companies that sign, the easier the challenge will become.
Why is the Glasgow Declaration necessary?
The tourism industry is notoriously difficult to decarbonise predominantly because of the travel involved in reaching and moving between destinations. The Glasgow Declaration recognises that to successfully decarbonise travel, all organisations in the industry must unite.
Who has signed the Glasgow Declaration and what does it mean?
Over 450 organisations have signed. You can see a list of signatories here. In principle, by signing, they agree to implement the commitments detailed in the Glasgow Declaration, notably:
Support the global commitment to halve emissions by 2030 and reach Net Zero as soon as possible before 2050.
Deliver a climate action plan within 12 months of becoming a signatory (or updating existing plans), and implement them.
Align plans with the five pathways of the Declaration (Measure, Decarbonise, Regenerate, Collaborate, Finance) to accelerate and co-ordinate climate action in tourism.
Report publicly on an annual basis on progress against interim and long-term targets, as well as on actions being taken.
Work in a collaborative spirit, share good practices and solutions, and disseminate information to encourage more organisations to sign and support one another to reach targets as quickly as possible.
It also means that travellers can consult the directory and travel with climate conscious organisations.
Is ecollective a signatory?
Does Greta Thunberg skip school?
Yes! We signed in Nov 2021 and our carbon reduction plan can be found here. We are aligned with the Science Based Targets initiative and We support a number of businesses within the tourism sector with their Net Zero targets and strategies. If you read our blog or our newsletters, you’ll also know how we regularly share information and tips for decarbonising.
I’m a tourism business, how do I sign?
Head to the One Planet Network site to sign up. All applications are reviewed. Approval can take up to 6 weeks.
Can ecollective help with our Carbon Action Plan?
Yes, whether you just need a sense check or need to create a plan from scratch, this is our bread and butter so no matter what stage you’re at, we can help.
